Where: River Oaks Country Club
PC Moment: Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee presented Dr. Peggy Smith, founder and director of the Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinics, with a Congressional proclamation recognizing the positive impact that Smith has had on the youth of Houston. Started in 1969 as a one-day-a-week maternity clinic for young women, the provider of health care for indigent teens, with Smith at the helm, has grown to include 10 clinics treating both young women and men ages 13 to 24.
Also in the spotlight were honorees Houston Police Department Sgt. Karren Fields and Judge Mike Fields, recipients of the Dr. Peggy Smith Award for Professional Excellence. Former NFL star and founder of Pro-Vision Academy Roynell Young was presented the June and Virgil Waggoner Award for Volunteerism.
Proceeds from the luncheon are going to the Teen Clinics’ Project Bootstrap, which assists young parents with health care, with continuing their educations and obtaining resources for achieving gainful employment.
