Long-Awaited Sushi Haven Finally Reveals Its Houston Restaurant Opening Date

A Foodie High-Rise Takes Shape

BY // 06.06.17

It’s a restaurant opening that’s been more than a year in the making. Upscale Japanese steak, seafood, and sushi concept Roka Akor will finally unveil its first Houston restaurant on Monday, June 26 on the ground floor of PM Realty Group’s 40-story luxury high-rise 2929 Weslayan.

The Arizona-based eatery joins an elite sect of restaurants entering residential buildings in Houston. Earlier this year, downtown high-rise One Park Place added Brasserie du Parc, a French brasserie from Master Chef of France Phillipe Verpiand; and Houston Astros owner Jim Crane opened two restaurants — fine dining Italian eatery Potente and casual cafe Osso & Kristalla — in the 500 Crawford mid-rise in the Minute Maid Park nexus.

“Roka Akor will be a great complement to the amenities at 2929 Weslayan as we create the perfect feeling of home and luxury living environment,” says Roger Gregory, PM Realty Group’s president of investments. “We will continue looking for ways to enhance our residents’ experience through retail tenants, property events and amenities.”

Known for its prime steak and premium seafood offerings, Roka marks yet another posh dining destination on Houston’s ever-expanding and competitive dining scene. With outposts in restaurant capitals such as Chicago, San Francisco, and Scottsdale, the brand is no stranger to a little culinary competition.

In fact, it’s bested its competitors with a number of superlatives including landing the title of the “Best Sushi Restaurant in the U.S.” from Travel + Leisure, a “Top 10 Sushi Spots in the United States,”  nod from bon appétit, and has secured a coveted ranking as a Michelin Guide-recommended destination.

So what can Houstonians expect from the top tier Japanese restaurant? For starters, Roka will carry three varieties of certified Japanese wagyu: Kobe from Tajima, Miyazaki from Kysho Island, and Shiga from Hokkaido. (Prime American cuts will also be on hand.)

The restaurant will also showcase exotic, rare fish that will be flown in daily. The seafood selection will not only appear in menu entrees but also Roka Akor’s extensive sushi selection, which is served with fresh wasabi grated at the table, house-made soy sauce, and Himalayan rock salt.

We’re eager to see how Roka Akor’s premium sushi collection stacks up against local heavyweights like MF Sushi and Kata Robata.

“At Roka Akor, we take pride in the quality of our ingredients as well as the precision and originality of our preparations,” says Roka Akor’s corporate executive chef Ce Bian. “We look forward to sharing our cuisine with Houston.”

Also on tap, seasonally changing dishes featuring everything from Korean-spiced lamb chops and Chilean sea bass to grilled bone marrow with spicy sweet garlic soy and the Omakase — a personalized tasting menu with exclusive off-the-menu dishes.

Roka Akor tackles drinks with a whimsical cocktail menu, which captures the spirit of Japan with libations such as the Wakoucha, an adult sweet tea composed of gin, Averna, yuzu, Russian tea syrup, and guava. Overall, more than 200 wines and 60 sakes will be available at this long-anticipated new restaurant.
