The Weird Homes Tour is back. Unusual Houston houses inhabited by artists, performers, and collectors alike open their doors to the public for viewing in this one-day tour.

Off-beat and strange, these dwellings are full of art and oddities, laden with history and curiosities. Their intricately executed themes promise to enthrall and fascinate tour goers. Hippos anyone?

Weird Homes’ highlights include Sue Shefman‘s Hippolotofus Home, where 2,000 hippos take up residence along with the owner’s infamous hippo art car; The Art House of Bonnie Blue which is embellished with her folk art; Selia Qynn‘s Secret Garden, an abode certified by the National Wildlife Federation due to its natural sanctuary; the Portrait Home of Anne Reese Hernandez, a 1904 casa in The Heights brimming with the artist’s naive folk-style canvases; and the studio of Menil-exhibited talent Sharon Kopriva, where life sized nuns and priests are more than slightly haunting.

For those intent on seeing every home, carpooling is recommended as this self-paced, self-guided tour features three dwellings outside the Loop. Thirty dollars grants entrance into nine homes with the exception of The Marks Collection of cutting-edge contemporary art, which is only included in the VIP tour ($50 VIP tickets also include a post-tour party, 6 to 9 pm at Last Concert Cafe). For a complete listing and locations of the homes click here.

A portion of proceeds will be donated to New Hope Housing, an organization dedicated to finding temporary and permanent housing for those with limited incomes. (Recently, this nonprofit has worked with the Mayor of Houston to find temporary housing for 300 victims displaced by Hurricane Harvey.)
